«Ah, when the heroin is in my blood, and that blood is in my head, then thank God that I’m as good as dead.» —«Heroin» the Velvet Underground
Heroin totally conquered America in the beginning of 70`s. It was connected with a war in Indo-China when a half million group of USA troops were located in South Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. The control over their activities was almost absent.
It allowed the most enterprising people to cooperate and made a friendship with ethnic Chinese who were related to production and sale of opium and heroin.
They were created a new channel of drug smuggling into USA in a result. It took the start in a mountain area of “Golden Triangle” — territory under the Kuomintang`s army control where the governmental authority was largely absent. On a vehicles of USA army the opiates had arrived from “Golden Triangle” to a military bases of USA, particularly in Saigon and Bangkok and then directly to San Francisco and New York.
Finally, the heroin addiction in USA became a mass phenomenon and the Shan State was famous as one of the biggest and gangrenous drug syndicate in a World until the end of 80`s.
«New York City alone has records of some 40,000 heroin addicts, and the number rises between 7,000 and 9,000 a year» — Nixon wrote in his July 14, 1969, message to Congress.
«These official statistics are only the tip of an iceberg whose dimensions we can only surmise.» Two years later, Nixon also cited New York’s drug problem when he pledged that «America’s public enemy No. 1 in the United States is drug abuse. But no one could even imagine how fast and powerful the wave of drug dependency can be. There is a small fragment of statistics:
1970 – 706 000 people tried heroin for the first time in USA.
1971 – 922 000 heroin addicted people.
1972 – 10 70000.
1973 – 12 50000.
1974 – 14 00000.
In 80`s every man and every third woman in Bronx and Harlem was addicted to drugs. It started slow process of degradation and losing of family values. Today about 150 000 people tried heroin for the first time each year and it`s just in USA.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 70,000 deaths can be attributed to overdose every year.
